The center who studied the names above him

Mawae used to arrive at stadiums hours before kickoff, sit in the stands and read the names of great players. He wanted to be a good football player, not necessarily one of those names. His eight Jets seasons helped make that possible: he anchored the line for Curtis Martin and earned six Pro Bowl selections in New York. Entering the Ring put him alongside the teammates he treasured.

A center’s work helps the whole offense function. Mawae’s story connects that responsibility to the pride of earning a place among the team’s honored players.

Every appearance was a start

Mawae started all 118 regular-season games he played for the Jets. All seven of his NFL playoff appearances also came with New York.

Jets years: 1998–2005. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
