Patient cuts and credit for the blockers

McNeil was the rushing standard before Curtis Martin. He led the NFL in the shortened 1982 season, then ran for 202 yards and threw a touchdown pass in the playoff win at Cincinnati. When recalling that performance, he put the credit on the holes his linemen created. He left New York as its career rushing leader after spending every one of his 12 NFL seasons with the Jets.

The person behind the name

Their Jets story.

His running helped carry the Jets into the playoffs. The way he remembered those games also kept the work of his blockers and teammates in view.

The mark Martin would chase

McNeil finished with 8,074 rushing yards and 1,798 carries, both Jets career records at his retirement.

Jets years: 1981–1992. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
