Boxing strength and three positions on the line

Klecko brought a boxer’s competitive edge to the defensive line. At Temple he compiled a 25–2 boxing record and even sparred with Joe Frazier. In New York, that strength and technical skill made him central to the Sack Exchange. His versatility mattered as much as his power: he earned Pro Bowl recognition at defensive end, defensive tackle and nose tackle before finally entering Canton in 2023.

The person behind the name

Their Jets story.

Moving between end, tackle and nose let him solve different problems for the defense. That versatility gave the Sack Exchange much of its shape.

Before sacks became official

The Hall credits Klecko with 20.5 sacks in 1981, before sacks became an official NFL statistic in 1982.

Back for the playoffs

A ruptured knee tendon interrupted his 1982 season, but he returned for the Jets’ run to the AFC Championship Game.

Jets years: 1977–1987. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
