An owner remembered through his everyday encounters

Hess joined the five-man group that bought the financially troubled Titans in 1963, helping preserve the franchise that became the Jets. Players remembered the personal encounters as well as the business decisions. John Nitti recalled Hess valuing his offer to return salary while injured, even though union rules required payment. His ownership spanned the championship team and generations of Jets players.
