The first thousand yards came as a Jet

Riggins began his NFL career with the Jets, who selected him sixth overall in 1971. He spent five seasons in New York and reached 1,005 rushing yards in 1975, the first thousand-yard season of his career. Washington came next, along with the postseason performances that made him famous. The foundation of that powerful running style was already visible as a Jet.

The person behind the name

Their Jets story.

His New York years show the beginning of the powerful runner remembered for Washington. The Jets were where he first crossed the thousand-yard mark.

A rookie who caught passes, too

Alongside 769 rushing yards in 1971, Riggins caught 36 passes for 231 yards.

Jets years: 1971–1975. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
