The quarterback who made the guarantee stand

Namath gave the young Jets a star and a belief they could beat anybody. His Super Bowl III victory remains the defining image, but the football thinking mattered too: when Baltimore’s coverage opened the running game, he kept using it. He had already become pro football’s first 4,000-yard passer in 1967. Discussing the Ring of Honor, he emphasized the teammates whose names would share it.

The person behind the name

Their Jets story.

His confidence helped put the young league on equal terms with its older rival. On the field, reading the defense made that confidence useful.

Two leagues wanted him

The NFL’s Cardinals also drafted Namath. His reported $400,000 Jets contract in 1965 was a major signing for the AFL.

Jets years: 1965–1976. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
