An enduring example of recovery and family
Dennis Byrd spent four seasons on the Jets’ defensive line before a neck injury in 1992 ended his playing career. His recovery and return to walking became part of the team’s identity. The Jets named their inspiration award after him and retired No. 90 in 2012. Byrd died in an Oklahoma car crash on October 15, 2016, at age fifty.
The person behind the name
His place in Jets history rests in the relationships he built and the encouragement he gave teammates long after his playing career.
Byrd recorded 27 sacks in 57 Jets games between 1989 and 1992.
His older brother Dan had worn No. 90 in high school. Byrd chose the same number with the Jets to honor him.
Jets years: 1989–1992. The honors above distinguish team recognition from Canton’s whole-career recognition.
